prabal gurung: the newest 'it' boy or generic mall designer?

Born in Singapore, young designer Prabal Gurung has studied and traveled in nearly every continent, and currently resides in New York. He was awarded the "Best Designer" title at the 2009 annual Parsons / FIT design competition and has worked with both Cynthia Rowley and Bill Blass. Gurung's newest A/W 2010/2011 collection recently hit the runway with favorable reviews. His neutral color pallet features garments made from wool, cotton, chiffon, silk, and mink, while the look is described as “Modern Glamour in 3D”.

Though I always expect to be wowed and overwhelmed with creative designs from upcoming and seasoned designers, Gurung’s collection is quite underwhelming for the runway. I appreciate his simplistic designs and color choices and honestly, I could see a few of those pieces hanging in my closet. But does this collection just look like an expensive version of the clothes at New York & Company? I can’t help but think it does. I believe Gurung has a bright future in the fashion industry, and in the future you may just be able to pick up a dress of his for $49.99 at your nearest mall.

unimaginative and tired garments to fill retail shelves..

I love the excitement of seeing the upcoming season's trends, but these spring/summer 2010/2011 directions are both tired and overdone. The 'prarie look' seems to pop up every other season, almost as sporatic as a tornado touchdown. But this time, the inspiration, key shapes, and boring colors are worse than before. I don't care if this is what you'll be wearing these upcoming years, I'll just stick to my sequins, faux fur scarves, and gaudy pumps. Nobody needs this.

katie, my girl crush on you continues.

Not only am I obsessed with Katie Gallagher clothing (which you have to be a minimum of a size 0 to wear), but I'm also obsessed with her fashion sketches. Rarely do sketches catch the eye of fashion enthusiasts, but these are too creepy and odd not to fall in love with.

jimmie martin, decorate my house.

Ok, so even though I'm a fan of cool interior design, furniture doesn't usually get me off. That is, until I saw these Jimmie Martin gems available in London retail stores. I'm obsessed with the weirdness of the collection and each of these chairs would look great juxtaposed against my electric blue living room walls. If comparing to fashion design, these pieces combine the quirkiness of Urban Outfitters and the outrageous refinement of Alexander McQueen. I need this. And so do you.
