prabal gurung: the newest 'it' boy or generic mall designer?

Born in Singapore, young designer Prabal Gurung has studied and traveled in nearly every continent, and currently resides in New York. He was awarded the "Best Designer" title at the 2009 annual Parsons / FIT design competition and has worked with both Cynthia Rowley and Bill Blass. Gurung's newest A/W 2010/2011 collection recently hit the runway with favorable reviews. His neutral color pallet features garments made from wool, cotton, chiffon, silk, and mink, while the look is described as “Modern Glamour in 3D”.

Though I always expect to be wowed and overwhelmed with creative designs from upcoming and seasoned designers, Gurung’s collection is quite underwhelming for the runway. I appreciate his simplistic designs and color choices and honestly, I could see a few of those pieces hanging in my closet. But does this collection just look like an expensive version of the clothes at New York & Company? I can’t help but think it does. I believe Gurung has a bright future in the fashion industry, and in the future you may just be able to pick up a dress of his for $49.99 at your nearest mall.
